How To Deal With Police Summons

By Mick Olaf Monintja SH., MH.

Anyone will feel anxious if they have to face a police summons. To reduce the anxiety, you can try the following things.

1. Always check the identity first

Is it you or not? To prevent yourself from miscalling, always check your identity first. Make sure that it is your name written as the summoned subject.

2. Identify your status

Decide your capacity in the case. There are 3 types of status: witness, suspect and expert. The status must be clearly stated on the summons so you can decide what your capacity is in the related case.

3. Check the case and other details

Prepare related information. A police summons always informs a specific case. Identify the case so you can prepare related information and consider your position in that case. Don't forget to remember your summoned date, where you have to go, and who you will meet.

4. Call your lawyer

Take a safe precaution. A lawyer will give you the right advice, but a good lawyer will be able to calm you down and make you more confident to face the summons. They can accompany you and take care of you during the examination.

5. Face it confidently

Better finish it early. Meet the police investigator who summoned you at the designated time and place. The questioning and examination is only limited to events that you know, see or experience yourself. You can bring related documents that can support your statement.

6. Always inform your availability

Let them know. If you are unable to attend for some reason, coordinate with the police investigator (by phone or letter) and immediately suggest an alternative day. If you do not come and do not inform them, after the second summons they can pick you up with a warrant.
